- Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires states to identify, locate, and evaluate children with disabilities, regardless of the severity of their disabilities, who may be in need of special education services.
- Anderson School District Five has procedures in place to assist families and community entities in providing a continuous process of screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and evaluate all children residing in the school district with disabilities who may be in need of special education and related services. This includes children ages 3 to 21 who attend public or private schools; those who are home schooled; and those who are homeless or are wards of the state.
Who may refer a child?
A child may be referred to Child Find by any of the following:
- Parent/guardian
- Family member or friend
- Physician
- Child care provider
- Community Agency
*Parent/Legal Guardian involvement is needed for further action by Anderson School District Five.
When should a child be referred?
- When a child may not be meeting developmental milestones (communication, physical, thinking/ reasoning, self-help, and/or personal-social).
- When parent/guardian, or someone outside the family, is not able to understand what the child is saying or the child is having difficulty communicating/speaking.
- When a physical condition or medical disorder is interfering with a child’s development and/or learning.
NOTE: Any condition that affects a child’s ability to learn may be the basis for a referral. Concerns need not be limited to those listed above.

Privately Placed Students
Anderson School District Five Special Education spends a portion of funds each year on the education of privately placed students. Anderson School District Five special education invites homeschooling parents, homeschool organizations and private school organizations to contribute to the planning process of the expenditure of these funds.
Any interested parties desiring to understand and collaborate regarding the expenditure of funds should contact [email protected] to be included in collaborative meetings to discuss the use of funds.
South Carolina High School Credential
Anderson School District Five offers the South Carolina High School Credential to qualified grade students.
South Carolina has roughly 100,000 students with disabilities serviced under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), of which the majority are able to earn a State high school diploma. Given the varying levels of student achievement, some students are unable to complete this required high school coursework. As a result, there is a need to provide an alternative option for students with disabilities to demonstrate their ability to transition into the work community. The uniform state-recognized SC High School Credential will be aligned with the State's Profile of the South Carolina Graduate and to a newly created course of study for these students with disabilities whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) team determines this course of study is appropriate.
The purpose of the South Carolina High School Credential is to provide equitable job-readiness opportunities for these students throughout the state, ensure they have evidence of employability skills, and honor the work they have undertaken in our public schools.
